Shadows and Secrets

May 26, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm PDT

Grandpa Chin F. Foin, described as “the richest Chinaman in this country’s midwest,” went to work every morning donning a white starched shirt with a black bowtie, a black tuxedo and shiny black patent leather shoes. After gulping down a raw egg taken fresh from under the hen in the backyard of his mansion, his chauffeur would drive him to his fancy Chicago restaurant, the Mandarin Inn, where he oversaw the work of a hundred workers. The day would pass into the evening until he came home at midnight.

But one late night in 1924 the phone rang instead. He had died that night, plunging down the elevator shaft into the basement of his own restaurant

Was it murder? Was it the Tongs? Mafia?
