Our current newsletter
November 2025

Hello dear friends, and family - our wonderful community of so many across the country, if not the world.

In these days of so many reasons to be in despair, we want to be a voice of joy and gratitude as a way to uplift those around us.

One of the discussions we have at Eth-Noh-Tec is how to do that without dismissing what is happening here in America and around the world.

We know that we must hold steady. We know that we must remain committed to our mission to build cultural bridges and create compassionate communities.  We know we must not ignore the horrors going on throughout the world. We know that we must keep our joy, meaning, and gratitude alive and well so we can face the world without collapsing. And not just for ourselves, but for our communities.

We think these times call for us to reassess our skill sets, to look at broadening our storytelling forms, and to deepen our commitment to our mission in bold and new ways.

We are excited about the possibilities and invite you to support us as we investigate, delve deeply, and dedicate ourselves to discovering the wide world of possibilities.

One of the ways we are starting this new era is by:

  • Increasing our Board of Directors. We presently have 9 members and will be looking to fill 5 more positions. Is one of them you?

  • Creating committees that will help our board members in their supportive roles. You?

  • Of course, donations that will help hire a vision coach and a strategic planner to lead us in our search and develop a plan to manifest it. And that will support our programming. Your donation is so welcomed!

We are by no means finished! In fact our year has been busy:

  • Jan: our annual Oshogatsu, Japanese New Year’s feast and many guest artist performances.

  • Feb: Nancy’s awarded writing retreat in Montalvo, CA.. For two weeks she wrote her next book: a compendium of 25 pan-Asian folktales. Robert will do the illustrations, one for each story.

  • Feb: Nancy’s Red Altar novel was launched in the Chinese Center of the SF Main Library. Unfortunately, the books arrived at home while the reading and discussions were being held! A launch of a book without books!  Lovely!! But sales were made with deliveries!

  • Mar: Preparations made for ENT’s 2nd Strong Like Bamboo: Stories of Resilience in the Face of Racism. This year it was expanded to include Latino and LGBT+ stories and a separate gathering of the communities to share a meal, songs and stories. CAIR also presented how to be safe, know our rights as ICE agents began to enter our communities.

  • April: Various podcast performances and readings, including Feast of Stories at Solano College Asian American Studies. All our presentations include discussions, creating compassionate listening and community sharing. And Nancy returned for another 2 weeks at Montalvo, taking Robert this time, to start his illustrations!

  • May: Strong Like Bamboo! Performances with 6 tellers, panel and small group discussions.

  • June: The great Down Under! ENT went to Australia for a festival and conference! And even to contract COVID! Yep, several tellers got it and generously gave it to Robert! No symptoms tho! Nancy however went to ER for a separate lung problem. But all was well and tho we were not able to present one of our workshops and performances, we made it back for the last day and presented!

  • Summer on Orcas Island: Red Altar readings, Mindful Musings online presentations, Robert drawing, Nancy rehearsing for a Beatles choir and musical, Robert gardening, Nancy’s herbal garden and wood carving scoops for a wedding present! A trip to St. Louis for Nancy’s family reunion.

  • Oct: A quick trip back to the Bay area for a wedding and a Monterey Fishing Village Descendants’ Reunion of about 130 - only a small fraction of our multitude of generational cousins! Also a Mindful Musings of Spooky Tales! Harvesting Robert’s veggies, my herbs and drying what seems like a thousand apples that are everywhere on this island: apples, pears not just on trees, but on the ground and in boxes everywhere for public taking!

And now as November ends, it is a time of closing one door and opening another. It is a time of hibernation, of going inward and yet joining in community and family gatherings for the holidays.

And, here is one way we wish to be the voice of joy and gratitude: Our December Mindful Musings -  Radical Joy and Gratitude on Dec. 18th - stories, poetry, song and sharing.  More to come.

Thank you all for your generosity of time and energy, and of donations. We too want to thank our Board, and our two managing directors, Brittany Connolly and Tashi Natame Weiss.

We are so grateful for all of you in our lives.  Let us hold tight to joy together! Have a wonderful rest of your year, and a magical and promising new year.

Blessings, Nancy and Robert, Eth-Noh-Tec.
